There are people personifying the spirit of the whole nations. In Russia such is Ylya Muromets, in France – Jeanne D’Arc, in Great Britain – Winston Churchill. Similar to this are mountains: tall and gorgeous, they are also part and parcel of a nation’s pride and hence worshipped as sacred things. Legends are created around such mountains, their very existence is endowed with sacral value. With the Japanese such is Fujiyama, with the Nepal people –Chomolungma, with the Swiss it is Matterhorn. Worshipped mountains are not only the highest but also the most beautiful in the region. Fujiyama presents an ideal cone whose generatrix with Japanese elegance is a little bit concave. Matterhorn is a pyramid as unapproachable as the Swiss Guard and as sharp as a Swiss knife; from Switzerland it looks like a wave heaving proudly.
Every Japanese should see or, much better, climb the sacred Mount Fuji. Thanks to its Japanese-style delicate slopes and its moderate Japanese style height of 3776 м. above the see level it is accessible almost to anyone. Quite different are Matterhorn (4478 м.) or Chomolungma (8848 м.). They allow only for the choicest – the former due to its extremely steep slopes, the latter because of its extraordinary height. It was only in 1865 that the Englishman Edward Whymper and his team conquered Matterhorn. And only a century later in 1953 Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay conquered Chomolungma. But already Whymper paid a high price for the Conquest of Matterhorn. Descending, 4 out of the team of 7 died and the body of one of them, Lord Francis Douglas, has not been found up to now.
I am neither a Swiss, nor a high class climber, but since youth I have fallen in love with Matterhorn and it has always been my dream to see it with my own eyes. This love fell upon me from the trivial cover of the famous Swiss chocolate Tobleron. A little over half a century later my dream has come true: I observed Matterhorn with my own eyes and also with my daughter Dasha’s eyes. It’s a hard task to put to words my impressions of Matterhorn (not in vain some aestheticians consider quite fairly that Beauty as well as the concept of God cannot be expressed verbally). I can positively state only one thing: my youth enchantment was not a mistake. МATTERHORN IS BEAUTIFUL.
All his life the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai was painting the sacred mountain Fuji. By the end of his life Hokusai had collected his works into a series «36 Views of Mount Fuji», and later on «100 Views of Mount Fuji». The engravings of these series could depict for instance, a gigantic ocean wave (the famous «Great Wave of Каnagawa»), but somewhere in the background corner one could always see a tiny Fuji. Hokusai’s fame could not allow me to stay in peace, while I was enjoying the views of Matterhorn from various angles. At last I had the gall to do the following – to collect my photos of Matterhorn into a small series «36 Views of Matterhorn». Hopefully, if I have another chance to see Matterhorn, I‘ll collect a series of «100 Views ». But now let it be «36».
Back home, I read somewhere that after having seen Matterhorn, a person will turn rich and lucky. And it is only fair, as the reminiscences of Matterhorn have become my riches till the end of my days.
